Interview with Bobo Wince

Bobo Wince is the founder and CEO of both Label King (a personal shopper service) and Unified People (a clothing company) based out of Los Angeles. Having worked in fashion full time for the last decade he has made a name for himself in LA as a top designer.

When did you start Label King and how has it evolved since then?

I started Label King eight years ago. Label King went from being a retail store to a personal shopping service where we bring the clothes to the client. Moving away from the retail store business model to the personal shopper model increased profits dramatically for me due to the lower overhead. I got lucky, it was the right move at the right time.

When did you start Unified People and how has it evolved since then?

Unified People started two years ago and now has grown into a good partnership to where we are doing a lot of product placement and international sales. Having a lot of young and highly talented people in the company made a big difference.

What does “Unified People” stand for and how did you come up with the name?

Unified People stands for brining people together together for causes because individually we are not heard. I came up with the name from being against the war and what happened on 911.

How do you get celebrities to wear your clothing?

We got really lucky on that end. The celebs buy the product at the retail stores and get photographed wearing them in public. Most clothing companies give away a lot of free merchandise hoping for the celebs to ever wear it but in our case they actually like our products, enough to even pay for them. I like our model better because this way the company is making more money.

What is the most difficult part about launching a clothing line?

Having capital, time and resources for getting the product produced. It is not that easy to produce a quality product, it takes a lot of time and money. There are many variables that you need to manage when you are producing a product from scratch.

What was the most crucial thing you have done to grow your business?

Going store to store showing the product and working very long hours!!! But I love what I do so working the long hours are not as horrible as they sound.

What do you think is the major difference between entrepreneurs and those who work for someone else?

When working for yourself your work hours are very long and days off are here and there. The rewards are up to you in terms of doing something you like and the money you make. Working for someone else can limit your income and having to work for someone you may not like but you do get a regular check which is nice.

How do you generate new ideas for the business and the clothing line?

I get new ideas from other designers, internet reseach, and going to different stores and fashion shows. I think as a clothing company you need to maintain a healthy balance between being innovate and watching what the competition is doing.

How do you define success?

Becoming known for what you do!

Coco Chanel once said “Fashion is not something that exists in dresses only. Fashion is in the sky, in the street, fashion has to do with ideas, the way we live, what is happening.” What are your thoughts on that quote?

I agree with Coco Chanel. It is a feeling not what someone tells you to wear.

Giorgio Armani once said “I design for real people. I think of our customers all the time. There is no virtue whatsoever in creating clothing or accessories that are not practical.” What are your thoughts on that quote?

I agree as well, but he does not make clothes for plus size women and that is not practical.

Henry Ford once said that "A market is never saturated with a good product, but it is very quickly saturated with a bad one." What are your thoughts on that quote?

Good products are hard to develop and bad product is easy to develop.

Excluding yours, what business or company do you admire?

Forever 21

What is the most common mistake people make in dressing up every day?

Not looking in the mirror.

What advice would you give an entrepreneur who is just starting out?

Work hard, smart, and don’t give up. Be very careful with how you spend your money and time.
