How did you get started in the real estate industry?

After graduating from college, I decided to move back to California and join my father in his existing business as his licensed transaction coordinator. With the desire to open our own company, In July 2001 MOVEWEST Realty & Financial opened their doors.

How did you come up with the idea for your business (the concept of

Being in the Real Estate industry we were always analyzing our clients’ needs and thought about the questions they were always asking. They would come to us telling about different listings on different sites and it actually was very confusing for them. Aside from the MLS there are so many sites that offer different listings here and there but nothing comprehensive. So we thought….”wouldn’t it be great if everything was in one site”, it would make it so much easier for the consumer. . Plus it would be FREE to agent to use, instead of having to pay for several sites to advertise their listings. And with the economy being in such a down turn these past few years, it is an excellent tool for the agents as well. It really connects the consumers and the agents in an easy, non threatening and economical manner.

What was the most difficult part in getting started?

The most difficult part has been getting the ideas that have been formulated, implemented into the actual business site and getting it to function according to the consumers needs. It takes a lot of time and research to develop a thorough idea and get it to function on a web site.

What was the most crucial thing you have done to grow your business?

We have worked on an extensive business plan, doing a lot of research and analyzing what people in the Real estate market need/want/and are looking for to make their search successful.

How did you go about recruiting the right people into your business?

We really didn’t do a lot of recruiting. Through networking, we were able to find a few core people who had solid business experience and they naturally were sold on the idea. Once we outlined the general business plan and ideas, they were on board and wanted to be part of business building. From there, the knowledge and expertise of the various team members have helped to evolve the ideas into a more comprehensive and revolutionary business.

What is your favorite aspect of being an entrepreneur?

One of my favorite aspects includes the endless possibilities! We can dream up ideas and move forward in trying to make them happen. There is freedom in working for yourself and growing a business and great excitement in watching it all come together. Another great thing is getting to work with who you want to work with! I feel completely blessed to work with an amazing team of family and colleagues and always look forward to our business building and brainstorming sessions.

What is the top skill (or skills) needed to be a successful entrepreneur?

I believe top skills include self motivation & being able to work as part of a team. I’ve learned through building the Real Estate business as well as this company that it takes motivation to keep going when there isn’t someone there telling you what to do or clock in a timecard. And when a team can work together, it really makes it a lot of fun and exciting. Brainstorming as a team is a great way to really focus on all aspects of the business, as each person comes in with a different perspective and outlook on things.

What do you think is the major difference between entrepreneurs and those who work for someone else?

The freedom to dream, explore and have vision….and then run with it! Many times when working for someone else, they have their own ideas of what should happen and it doesn’t leave a lot of room for your personal creativity. When it’s your business, you and your team have that freedom!

What has been one of your failures, and what have you learned from it?

Trying to always make someone happy or please them with a certain outcome. The reality is, you can’t always make someone happy all the time! Nor is that always the best thing for the person. I’ve realized that whatever I’m working on, whether it’s a relationship or a work project, honesty and integrity will get you a lot farther than just trying to appease someone or make them happy for the moment.

What motivates you and/or keeps you motivated?

My family and helping others is what keeps me motivated. Knowing that I can be building a business that will help provide for my family in the future helps to keep me working and developing new ideas for business growth. Also, I enjoy helping see others succeed. Throughout my Real Estate career, I have realized that purchasing a home or investment property is usually one of the largest investments that people will ever make. There are a lot of decisions that go into making that choice and if I can help educate and make it a great experience for them, I believe I have helped them in achieving one of their dreams. I believe that this company, SeeAllListings, can help both consumers and others in the Real Estate industry truly achieve some of their goals with more ease.

Vince Lombardi once said “Leaders are made, they are not born. They are made by hard effort, which is the price which all of us must pay to achieve any goal that is worthwhile.” What are your thoughts on that quote?

I’ve always heard that first born children tend to be more dominate and leaders. Well, I am a first born and not sure if that has something to do with my personality or not. However, when I think about what makes a leader, I automatically think about those who have influenced and left a positive impression of quality leadership traits. In my life, my father was a strong military man who instilled good work ethic, self -motivation and integrity in me from a young age. My mother has taught me the value of loving relationships, solid family, and being a good support. These qualities were demonstrated to me from a very young age and I and have tried my best to instill them in whatever I am doing. Whether it was college, working, building a business or taking care of my family, each of these learned traits have been used. I was always encouraged, from a young age, to challenge myself and not be afraid to try something new, even when it means going against the flow of what others may be doing. Pretty much throughout my life, whatever I’ve been involved in, it evolves into a leading/training type of role. Part of my motivation in that, is wanting to see other succeed, learn and grow as well. When it comes to growing SeeAllListings, the same applies. I think some of my natural instincts combined with what I have been taught and modeled over the years helps give me a good foundation for business building and working with others. I continually remember what motivates me and the consistency it takes to reach a goal. It’s not always the easy thing to do but I know it’s worth the hard work.

Brian Tracy once said “You have to put in many, many, many tiny efforts that nobody sees or appreciates before you achieve anything worthwhile.” What are your thoughts on that quote?

This quote brings back a lot of memories of opening our Real Estate company! All the behind the scene stuff like late night office painting to cleaning the carpets ourselves, because our budget was extremely small in the beginning. All the little things we did to make a big difference to our clients when they walked into the office. When you keep the end goal in mind…it makes all the smaller things more enjoyable. The same thing with SAL….all the drawings and deigns and the many many steps that seemed small and tedious in the beginning is what is making the end result more attainable.

Henry Ford once said “Failure is the opportunity to begin again, more intelligently.” What are your thoughts on that quote?

It’s true. Each time you do something that doesn’t quite work….your mind gets racing on what can make it work or make it better. This has been a huge part of SAL. We have gone through many design and functionality changes to really come up with what the consumer is looking for and will best help them in their real estate goals.

Michael Eisner once said “There's no good idea that can't be improved on.” What are your thoughts on that quote?

That is why I am a big fan of team work! Everyone has different experiences and comes to the table with a different perspective. It’s amazing how you can have one problem, objective or goal and each person can have a different way of achieving or approaching it. The combination of various outlooks can be so much more beneficial that one person trying to figure it out by themselves. With our team at SAL I have noticed time after time that each person has a valuable addition to an idea that helps it to evolve into something greater than we thought in the beginning.

What advice would you give an entrepreneur who is just starting out?

Don’t do it alone, realize that there are people out there who can help you take your ideas to the next level and are skilled in areas that you may not be. Take your time in finding the right people to help you achieve your dream….and go for it. Expect setbacks and delays but just look at them as an opportunity to make your idea even better and be challenged into something greater.
